The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is narrated by an unnamed, distraught lover–possibly a student–as he laments the loss of his love, Lenore. On this cold, dreary December night, the poem tracks his descent into madness as he is visited upon by a raven. The Raven has long been recognized for its mythological, religious and supernatural references. It remains among the most famous pieces of poetry ever written.
